The Obligation to Beauty: A Salon by Pearl Social

An intellectual salon asking why modern life prioritizes optimization over beauty, and what we lose when everyday spaces are designed without care.

Date & Time at 6:00 PM EST
Location 139 Ludlow St New York, US
Organizer Pearl Social

Why we picked this

A salon that takes beauty seriously as an ethical question, not a lifestyle one. Attendees come prepared with examples of genuinely beautiful work and work that has been optimized to death.

This salon explores beauty as an ethical commitment rather than mere aesthetic preference. The organizers propose that modern society has prioritized optimization (speed, money, safety, convenience, scale) while neglecting meaningful form that makes life feel textured, alive, and worth inhabiting.

Facilitated by Sabeen Sidiqui, Programme Lead for Innovation and Industry at the World Economic Forum. Attendees are asked to read Ryan Khurana’s essay “The Obligation to Beauty” beforehand and bring one example each of genuinely beautiful work and “optimized but dead” design.
