Why we picked this

A free book launch at Pioneer Works with signed copies included — Pollan in conversation with Janna Levin on consciousness is the kind of pairing that makes Red Hook worth the trip.

Michael Pollan’s A World Appears takes the questions he raised in How to Change Your Mind — about psychedelics, perception, and the nature of consciousness — and pushes them further into neuroscience and philosophy. Where his earlier book was largely a first-person account of psychedelic experience grounded in emerging clinical research, the new book asks what those experiences actually tell us about how the mind constructs reality. It is the kind of project that requires him to move between brain science, phenomenology, and the experiential accounts of people at the edges of ordinary consciousness, and Pollan has spent years building the access and fluency to do it.

The launch event at Pioneer Works pairs him with Janna Levin, the astrophysicist, novelist, and Pioneer Works science director whose own work has long moved between the technical and the humanistic. Levin’s books on black holes and the mathematics of the universe share with Pollan’s work a commitment to making difficult ideas accessible without flattening them. Their conversation is likely to range from the neuroscience of altered states to the philosophical problem of what it means to claim that consciousness has a particular character or structure.

Pioneer Works itself adds something to the evening: the converted Red Hook factory hosts a plant sale and stargazing alongside the talk, in keeping with the venue’s practice of treating a book launch as a full sensory event rather than just a reading. Signed copies are included with the free ticket.
