Why we picked this

Kendi is asking where authoritarian ideas come from and how they travel. That question has rarely been more pressing, and the Lincoln Theatre is the right venue for it.

Dr. Ibram X. Kendi’s new project traces the intellectual origins and transmission of authoritarian ideas — mapping the chain of thinkers, arguments, and political movements that carry antidemocratic thought from one era to the next. It is a work of intellectual history with direct implications for understanding the present.

Kendi is the founding director of the Boston University Center for Antiracist Research and the author of “Stamped from the Beginning,” which won the National Book Award, and “How to Be an Antiracist,” one of the most discussed works of political nonfiction of the past decade. He brings to this new work the same combination of historical rigor and willingness to make direct arguments.

The event takes place at the historic Lincoln Theatre on U Street NW, a venue whose own history is inseparable from the story of Black cultural and intellectual life in Washington. Tickets are required.
