Samuel Laurence Cunnane: Blue Road — Artist in Conversation
Photographer Samuel Laurence Cunnane discusses a decade of analogue photography across Europe and Ireland in his first London exhibition at the Hayward Gallery.
Why we picked this
Cunnane shoots analogue film, develops his own colour prints in a County Kerry darkroom, and has built a body of work that feels like it belongs to a different century. Worth seeing the exhibition and hearing him explain it.
Photographer Samuel Laurence Cunnane joins the Hayward Gallery for a conversation about Blue Road, his first London exhibition. The show brings together works from the past decade of his analogue photography practice, images that carry a distinctive quality rooted in his deliberate methods.
Cunnane takes many of his photographs during extended periods of travel across Europe and beyond, then returns to his native County Kerry in southern Ireland to develop the colour prints in his own darkroom. The resulting images have an enigmatic quality — places and moments rendered with a patience that digital photography rarely allows.
