Why we picked this

A working group that digs into campus archives and Harlem repositories to ask hard questions about the university's role in shaping — and sometimes deepening — urban inequality.

The University in/and Crisis Working Group presents student research examining how social difference and spatial segregation have shaped histories of democratic education in New York City. Drawing on campus archives and Harlem neighborhood repositories, researchers from Barnard, Teachers College, and Columbia trace the enduring effects of institutional power on the communities surrounding the university.

The evening is directed by Professors Anupama Rao and C. Riley Snorton and culminates with a celebration featuring music and refreshments. It is a rare opportunity to see critical university studies in action — scholarship that turns the lens inward on higher education itself.

Free and open to the public.
