Why we picked this

Susan Cheever has written with rare honesty about addiction, family mythology, and what it means to be the daughter of one of America's most celebrated short story writers. This is a writer whose personal stakes in her subject matter are impossible to separate from the work.

Susan Cheever joins The New School for an evening spanning her literary career and the family legacy that has shaped much of her work. The daughter of John Cheever, she has built her own body of work across memoir, biography, and cultural criticism, writing with particular candor about addiction, family, and the distance between public reputation and private reality.

Her books include Home Before Dark, a memoir of her father that redefined literary biography, and Note Found in a Bottle, her account of alcoholism. Cheever brings a novelist’s eye to nonfiction and a memoirist’s ruthless honesty to everything she writes.

Free and open to the public.
