Why we picked this

A sitting senator discussing democratic resilience in person, in Washington, is a specific thing. Booker has been one of the more publicly visible voices on civic courage in the current moment.

Senator Cory Booker’s new book “Stand” makes the case for civic courage as a practical and moral requirement — not an optional add-on to democratic life, but the thing that democratic institutions ultimately depend on. He draws on his own experience in the Senate as well as the longer history of American democratic struggle.

Booker has represented New Jersey in the United States Senate since 2013. Before that he served as Mayor of Newark. He has been among the most prominent Democratic voices on democratic norms, voting rights, and the obligations of public service. The book is part political memoir and part argument for a particular kind of engaged citizenship.

The event takes place at Sixth & I in Washington. Conversation is open to audience questions. Tickets are required.
